Date: Sat. August 17, 2013
Time: 2:00 pm
6000 N. Broadway Street
About this event:
Why is it that so few people know about the life of Bayard Rustin? How does Rustin’s career as an activist for social justice and world peace speak to the current moment? John D’Emilio will join us to help us answer these questions.
John D’Emilio is a historian who teaches at UIC. He studies movements for social justice, the history of sexuality, and gay/lesbian politics. The author or editor of nine books, he is best known for Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America and Lost Prophet: the Life and Times of Bayard Rustin, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. He recently received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Publishing Triangle, and a lifetime “Distinguished Service Award” from the Organization of American Historians.
D’Emelio will answer any questions that audience members have about Rustin’s life and work, and copies of D’Emilio’s books will be available for signing and sale.
