Elvis Releases First Single

On the evening of July 5, 1954, Elvis was in Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, recording some tracks. During a recording break, he began playing around with the tune "That's All Right (Mama)" on his guitar, a song written by blues artist Arthur Crudup. Elvis’ fast version of the song caught the attention of Sun Studios owner Sam Phillips, who had Elvis record it with Bill Black on bass and Scotty Moore on guitar. "That’s All Right" (“Mama” was removed from the title) was released on July 19, 1954 as Elvis’ first single. It became a regional hit and reached number four on the Memphis charts. Elvis would remain with Sun Studios until November 1955, when Phillips sold his contract to RCA Victor. It was at RCA Victor where Elvis recorded his first number one hit, Heartbreak Hotel, released in January 1956. The rest is, as they say, rock and roll history.
