  • Many CPL locations have a separate Literacy Collection with books, CDs and DVDs designed to help people learn to read and write, or improve their reading and writing. Larger collections, including the Literature and Language Department at the Harold Washington Library Center, also offer easy readers, such as classics rewritten at a lower reading level.

    The Adult Education Department of the City Colleges of Chicago offers classes for people wanting to improve their reading, writing and math skills. The department also offers classes for people preparing to take the GED. Classes are free and open to Illinois residents.

    GCFLearnFree.org features online activities and videos to improve reading by providing real-life examples and pronunciation help.

  4. Literacy Volunteers of Illinois »

    Literacy Volunteers of Illinois supports local volunteer literacy programs through referrals and training.

  5. ProLiteracy Education Network »

    Read and listen to activities to practice reading, vocabulary, writing and math. The everyday skills section lets users practice literacy skills in topics such as budgeting, personal safety and working with a child’s teacher.
