Primary or secondary source?
Magazine and journal articles are generally secondary sources.
JSTOR »
Find full-text articles from a variety of history journals. JSTOR will help you find older articles not available in ProQuest Magazines & Journals, but is lacking more recent articles which will only be found in ProQuest.
Available only on Chicago Public Library computers.
ProQuest Magazines & Journals »
ProQuest Magazines & Journals is another good source for articles from history journals and will help you find more recent articles not available in JSTOR. Full text is available in the database for about sixty percent of articles. When full text is not available, use the "get article" buttons to find the full-text in other Chicago Public Library databases or to link to the catalog to see whether the Library has the magazine or journal on its shelves.
Book Reviews
Historical journals devote quite a bit of space to book reviews since most original research in history is published in books.
Book reviews can be helpful in pointing you to new sources of information. But the sheer number that will sometimes appear in your results can make locating articles difficult.
Here's how to remove book reviews from your results sets.
In JSTOR, on the Advanced Search page, under "Narrow By," check the box next to "Article" under "Item Type."
In ProQuest Magazines & Journals, select "Article" under "Document Type" on the results page after running your search.
