Biographical Note

Virgil Johnson's career as a costume designer has spanned four decades. From his first professional designs for summer stock theaters on the East Coast, to his most recent designs for the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Johnson has designed over one hundred productions.

Johnson graduated in 1961 from Boston University, having earned his BFA in Design and Art History under the training of Raymond Sovey and Horace Armistead, house designer for the Metropolitan Opera. His education prepared him for staff work at the City Center Opera in New York, the Washington Opera Society, and the Turnau Opera of Woodstock, New York.

By 1967, Johnson had relocated to Chicago and completed an M.A. in Theatre at Northwestern University. In the same year, he joined the staff of the Goodman School of Drama (now the Theatre School at DePaul University), where he later served as resident costume designer of the Goodman Theatre from 1969 to 1978. Johnson joined Northwestern University's Theatre Department in 1985 as a tenured Professor of Costume Design, and served as Department Chair from 2002 to 2004.

In addition to teaching, Johnson has continued his own professional design work on productions at many Chicago theaters, including the Court, Victory Gardens, Body Politic, Steppenwolf, Northlight, and Apollo Theatres, the Ravinia Festival and the Lyric Opera. He has also designed for theaters outside the Chicago area, two of which are represented in this collection (Missouri Repertory Theatre in Kansas City and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis).

Johnson's designs have won considerable recognition, including: Joseph Jefferson Awards for his work on The Government Inspector (Goodman Theatre, 1985), A Little Night Music (Goodman Theatre, 1994), and Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2 (Chicago Shakespeare Repertory, 1998); and the Michael Merritt Award for Excellence in Collaboration and Design in 2001.

In addition to theatrical design, Johnson's interests extend to historic costume. He was guest curator of costume collections at the Evanston Historical Society (1978-1990) and designed five costume exhibitions at the Chicago Historical Society.

Scope and Content

The Virgil Johnson collection contains costume drawings, photographs, and accompanying materials, covering the years 1969-1997. The drawings represent Johnson's work at several Chicago area theaters, as well as the Missouri Repertory Theatre (now the Kansas City Repertory Theatre) and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. Of the 28 plays in the collection, 19 were produced at the Goodman Theatre, where Johnson was resident costume designer from 1969-1978.

The materials in the Virgil Johnson Collection have been arranged into three series: Costume Drawings, Accompanying Materials and Photographs. The collection is arranged alphabetically by theatre, then chronologically by production.

The Costume Drawings series contains 638 drawings, working drawings, fabric swatches, costume plots, and promotional materials for productions from 1969 to 1997. Most of the drawings are watercolor and/or gouache on watercolor paper. Because they vary in size, the drawings have been arranged into small (a), medium (b), and large (c) boxes. One production (Goodman Theatre, 1985: The Government Inspector) contains drawings of a smaller, fourth size (d). Also included in this series are oversize materials, which while separated physically from the manuscript material, are noted with their respective productions and also listed at the end of the Box and Folder Inventory.

The Accompanying Materials series consists of programs, production notes, and actor measurement sheets. This series is arranged alphabetically by theatre, then chronologically by production.

The Photographs series contains promotional photos, photos of actors and casts, and several images of Virgil Johnson. This series is arranged alphabetically by theatre, then chronologically by production.

Additional material on these productions may be found in the Chicago Theater Collection archives for Body Politic, Goodman, Northlight, Steppenwolf and St. Nicholas Theatres. Programs for productions at other theatres may be found in the Miscellaneous Theatres Program Collection.

Provenance

These materials were donated to the Special Collections and Preservation Division by Virgil Johnson in 1988.
