Scope and Content

Twelve titles of South Shore publication are included in this collection. There is only one title for which is held a significant series of the publication, The South Shore Newscaster, 1935-37, folders 1:10 through 1:12. The remainder of the collection is odd issues, some of which were saved because of a particular topic covered, others of which seem to have simply been saved. However, not a single title of those in this collection which date prior to 1936 and were regularly-issued papers appear in American Newspapers 1821-1936: A Union Checklist, and may therefore be unique to Special Collections holdings. This includes: The Chicago Comet, Demosthenes, South Shore Journal, The South Shore Newsletter, and Windsor Park Herald.

The newspapers from the 1960s and 1970s illustrate the changing population of the South Shore neighborhood. The brief references are taken either from the headline of the newspaper or from the news story for which the paper appears to have been saved by the Society.

Cards for each newspaper are found in the Special Collections Serials Holdings List file drawer.

Provenance

The newspapers in this collection were gathered by the South Shore Historical Society and housed with the Society’s collections at the South Shore Branch of The Chicago Public Library. When the Society’s materials were transferred to the Special Collections Department in the early 1980s, the newspapers were included in this transfer.

Related material can be found in the South Shore Community Collection (SSCC) and the South Shore Historical Society Collection (SSHS). The newspapers have been cataloged separately in order to highlight the information they contain and to afford them proper housing.

Processed by G. Wilson, August 1989.
