Organization History

The Coalition to Save the ‘Met’

Five people long associated with Chicago’s historic Metropolitan Community Church met in July 2001 to develop plans to save the church from demolition. Their fears had been aroused when the pastor of Metropolitan Community Church, the Rev. Leon Perry III, suddenly announced plans to demolish the historic church and build a new church complex on the property. The five at the meeting agreed that the architectural and historical significance of the church demanded that it should be saved. They recalled MCC’s central role in the organization of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and in rallying the community to defend Ethiopia against Mussolini’s invasion, and as the site where notable African American leaders W.E.B. DuBois, Ida B. Wells, Paul Robeson and Mahalia Jackson had spoken and sung.

In early August 2001, some 27 people, many of them elderly, formally organized the Coalition to Save the ‘Met.’ Among the participants were several who had been members of MCC since the early years of the church in the 1920s. Led by Linda Richardson Slaughter, daughter of the late Rev. Theodore Richardson, they organized letter-writing campaigns and street protests, presented their arguments to the media and dispatched speakers to educate the community. In less than one month, more than 5,000 people had signed petitions to save MCC; the petitions were delivered to City Hall and to Third Ward Alderman Dorothy Tillman. In the media, the campaign was led by the renowned journalist Vernon Jarrett, who wrote many columns educating the public about historic political, literary and musical events held at MCC throughout the 20th century. More than 200 newspaper articles were published about the controversy.

The coalition also successfully halted the removal of the church’s famous stained glass windows and blocked salvage thieves. They succeeded in winning the support of many historic preservation groups and had MCC placed on the “10 Most Endangered List” of historic sites. On November 4, 2002, the coalition was granted a temporary restraining order in Cook County Circuit Court, enjoining Metropolitan Community Church leadership from engaging in any activities designed to dismantle or demolish the building. The restraining order remained in effect until June 2003, when Christ Apostolic Church’s pastor, Dr. Leon Finney, signed an agreement to purchase the entire historic site.

The coalition then turned its attention to fundraising for the needed restoration and renovation of the building and documenting the church’s history. In September 2003, the Coalition to Save the ‘Met’ was honored with the Richard H. Driehaus Preservation Award for Advocacy. It was the first African American group to receive this award. In 2007, at a meeting at MCC, the coalition agreed to collect historic documents and photographs to assure that the history of Metropolitan Community Church would not be forgotten. They donated these materials to the Chicago Public Library’s Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection of Afro-American History and Literature.

Metropolitan Community Church

In September 1920, members of Chicago’s Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, disturbed at an unexpected order moving their pastor, the Rev. W.D. Cook, to a post in Iowa, met and decided to form a new church, outside the A.M.E. denomination. A week later, on October 3, 1920, the new congregation held its first services in rented space at Unity Hall, 3140 S. Indiana Avenue. At the end of Cook’s sermon, 585 people joined the new church. The members decided to call their congregation The People’s Church and Metropolitan Community Center. In subsequent weeks the church held Sunday services at Wendell Phillips High School. Renowned conductor J. Wesley Jones was hired as the church’s choirmaster. The congregation selected a board of trustees, including prominent physician Roscoe C. Giles and funeral director W.J. Morsell. By the end of 1920, Metropolitan hosted the first national council of primarily African American community churches. Three years later, a new denomination, the National Council of People’s Community Churches, was formed.

The new church grew rapidly through the 1920s, and plans were made to secure a permanent home. In 1927, First Presbyterian Church, a white congregation, moved to the Woodlawn neighborhood, and put their church building, at 41st Street and Grand Boulevard (now Martin Luther King Drive), up for sale. The historic church had been designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by architect Richard T. Long. The building was completed in 1890 and is considered one of the most impressive examples of church architecture in 19th century Chicago. First Presbyterian Church had added a huge Skinner organ, installed in 1922. Metropolitan Community Church purchased the building in February 1927 for the price of $185,000.

The Rev. William Decatur Cook passed away on July 5, 1930. Dr. Joseph Meakin Evans was called from Detroit to deliver the sermon. Just before his death, Cook had written a letter to the congregation recommending Evans as his successor. Evans was called to lead MCC and delivered his first sermon in August 1930.

In the 1930s MCC enlarged its role as a meeting and organizing place for a wide range of community, labor, fraternal and political groups. From the beginnings of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925, MCC served as its Chicago host. Chicago activist Milton P. Webster was the union’s first vice president. Webster and the union’s leader, A. Philip Randolph, often spoke at MCC. The church also hosted meetings of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and it co-sponsored rallies to support Ethiopian resistance to Mussolini’s invasion. In the 1940s the church welcomed First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and hosted a national gathering of the March on Washington Movement.

Music had a strong role in the church from its beginnings. Professor J. Wesley Jones served as minister of music at MCC from 1920 until the last years of his life and was president of the National Association of Negro Musicians from 1928 to 1930. When the gospel revolution stirred Chicago African American churches in the early 1930s, Jones’ assistant, Magnolia Lewis Butts, organized the W.D. Cook Gospel Choir. An acclaimed soloist, Lewis Butts also joined with Thomas Dorsey and Theodore Frye in organizing the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses in 1932. A 1935 event featured more than 600 members of Chicago-area gospel choruses. Among many stars who performed at MCC were Mahalia Jackson, Anita Patti Brown, Roberta Martin, Edward Boatner and Theodore Charles Stone.

Dr. Joseph M. Evans passed away on June 27, 1956. Prior to his death, he had recommended that theRev. Theodore Richardson succeed him. One week later the church called Richardson to the pastorate. Richardson directed many physical improvements in the church and oversaw the founding of the Metropolitan Community Foundation. The foundation built Cal-Met Village, an apartment tower serving the needs of MCC members and neighborhood residents. It also began an annual award of college scholarships. The strong music tradition of MCC continued to flourish during Richardson’s tenure, with Eugene Scott serving as minister of music. Richardson retired in October 1995 and died February 3, 2012.

The Rev. Leon Perry III was installed as pastor of MCC on July 7, 1996. Perry moved Metropolitan Community Church, with some of the congregation’s members, to a new location at 4610 S. Prairie Avenue. The historic building is now owned by Metropolitan Apostolic Community Church, 4100 S. Martin Luther King Drive. The pastor is the Rev. Leon Finney.

Scope and Content Note

Series 1: Coalition to Save the ‘Met’ Documents
These files were compiled by Linda Richardson Slaughter, one of the original organizers of the Coalition to Save the ‘Met’. They document the organization’s successful campaign to prevent the dismantling and demolition of the historic church building. Included are articles of incorporation, petitions, correspondence, programs, contractors’ quotes, research materials and clipping files from the origin of the coalition in 2001 through 2006.

Series 2: Metropolitan Community Church Anniversary Books
Starting in the mid-1930s, Metropolitan Community Church celebrated noteworthy anniversaries. This series includes anniversaries of MCC from 1939 through the 75th anniversary in 1995. There are also anniversary books for the Rev. Joseph and Mrs. Grace Evans’ 50th wedding anniversary, for the Rev. Theodore Richardson’s 16th and 25th anniversaries of service to MCC and a special publication, “Memories of the Met in Pictures,” published in 1989. The series is arranged chronologically.

Series 3: MCC Organizational Documents
In keeping with its rules encouraging participatory governance, MCC published a variety of organizational documents throughout its history. This series includes the original 1930 “Handbook of Suggested Forms of Organization, Order of Service and Rules and Regulations.” Also included are annual summaries of the work of the church beginning in 1936, a membership manual and revisions of the constitution and by-laws. This series is arranged chronologically.

Series 4: MCC Programs
This series documents programs held at the church or in which MCC participated from 1942 through 2002. The programs are divided into two groups: programs sponsored by the church and its organizations, and funeral programs. Each group is arranged chronologically.

Series 5: MCC Biographical and Historical Items
This small series contains materials documenting the lives and work of the Rev. Joseph Evans and the Rev. Theodore Richardson, as well as administrative, financial and organizational documents from 1898 through 2001.

Series 6: MCC Serials and Clippings
From the 1920s through the 1990s, MCC produced Tidings, a serial publication for its members. Most of the issues have been lost, but the series includes some issues from 1930 through 1990. Also included is a single issue of Metropolitan Community Pioneer, published in 1957, as well as church bulletins from 2001. The serials are arranged chronologically. Also included are a few clippings from the Chicago Defender, reporting on MCC events and activities. These are also arranged chronologically, from 1920 through 1992.

Series 7: MCC Scrapbooks Honoring the Rev. Richardson
When the Rev. Theodore Richardson was retiring in 1995, MCC members created two scrapbooks remembering his long years of service to the church. One scrapbook, given to him in October 1995, contains both documents and photographs. The second, given in January 1996, contains only photographs of his retirement celebration.

Series 8: Leroy Shackelford, Jr. Papers
Leroy Shackelford, Jr., a lifelong member of MCC, was an early activist in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. A friend of BSCP Vice President Milton Webster, Shackelford took on many union responsibilities, in addition to his work at MCC. The Coalition to Save the ‘Met’ added his papers to this collection. His papers include organizational documents from the BSCP and from the successor union into which it merged after 1978, the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks. The papers contain BSCP and BRAC contracts, rules, union documents, correspondence, serials and clippings. Also included are materials from the A. Philip Randolph Institute and a small group of memorabilia collected by Shackelford.

Series 9: MCC Photographs
This extensive series includes nearly 500 photographs of MCC, its activities and its members. The earliest photos date from 1925, and the most recent are dated in 2000. The photographs are largely arranged in the order in which they were donated.

Series 10: Audiovisual Materials
Lawrence Bertha, a longtime member of MCC, was the videographer who recorded MCC choir musical programs from 1987 through 1996. These recordings are on DVD-R. Also included are a few AV recordings on audiocassette.

Series 11: Memorabilia
A small group of MCC memorabilia, including a framed document listing the 1920 founders of the church, is included in this series.
