The Lawndale-Crawford area was established in 1827, when the United States Congress passed legislation granting the State of Illinois 284,000 acres of land alongside of what would become the Illinois-Michigan Canal. By 1860, many farms dotted this "Mud Lake" area, as it was then called due to the constant flooding of the Chicago River. The area continued to grow, and in 1863, the expansion of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad produced two separate communities' one around the Lawndale railroad station, and the other around the Crawford station.
Population increased further after 1871, as a direct result of the Chicago Fire, which produced a great influx of families into the district. A few years, the Lawndale area was sub-divided into lots and became mainly residential, while Crawford remained a farming section.
Both Lawndale and Crawford were two distinct suburbs of Chicago until the late 1880s. As more industries moved into the area, and the population continued to grow, the communities merged into one, which eventually led to the annexation of the area to the City of Chicago in 1889.
By 1900, Bohemian immigration into the Lawndale-Crawford area replaced the earlier settlers of Dutch, German, Irish, and Scotch extraction. Within a few years, the community was considered the largest Bohemian settlement, outside of Prague, Czechoslovakia. This ethnic group was very politically and socially active throughout the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s which resulted in the formation of numerous civic and social organizations as well as a close-knit community.
As the area continued to develop, the population shifted, and the Bohemians began to move further west and northwest. They were replaced by various other ethnic groups such as the Poles, and finally the Hispanics, who still reside in the area today.
The early history of the Lawndale-Crawford area and its growth and development is reflected in the papers that comprise this collection.
This collection consists of an initial accession and three supplements. Photographs are listed following the Box and Folder Inventory below. Supplement 1:
The materials in this supplement consist of items transferred from the
Toman Branch Library after the original processing of this collection.
The bulk of this material is land title abstracts dated 1873-1905, concerning
property in the Lawndale-Crawford area (5:29-33).
Of particular note are two folders (5:27-28) concerning Thomas Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937), Czechoslovak president who lived for a short time with a Lawndale-Crawford family in 1918-19 while on faculty at the University of Chicago. The presence of a large Czechoslovakian community in the Lawndale-Crawford neighborhood prompted the Toman Library to collect heavily in the history and culture of Czechoslovakia; this Czech collection at Toman bore Masaryk's name in his honor.

Technical High School no longer exists. These items are found
in folders 6:1 to 6:3.
These materials were received by Special Collections via anonymous donation in May, 1988. This donation included a yearbook for Herzl Junior High School, which has been cataloged as part of the North Lawndale Community Collection, see NL 2:8a.

The papers that comprise the Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection were gathered together by members of the Lawndale-Crawford Historical Association throughout its existence (1934-present). The association was organized in the Fall of 1934 to commemorate the earlier settlers of the area, stimulate and maintain interest in the neighborhood history, and establish a close relationship with the Chicago Public Library. In 1981, the Special Collections Division of the Chicago Public library received a one year grant from the Dr. Scholl Foundation to preserve several of the neighborhood historical collections found in many of the branch libraries. The Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection was processed as part off this grant and made available for research in March of 1983.
The records of two community groups, Girl Scout Troop #427 and the Lawndale-Crawford Historical Association, have been separated from the general material and formed into individual collections because of their unique or complete nature. See separate finding aids for these collections.
The Lawndale-Crawford Community Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate although photocopy and photoreproduction services are available depending upon the condition of the original materials. First time patrons to Special Collections must present a photo i.d. and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collection and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.

BOX 7 Biography
1. Toman, John-Scrapbook (in Czech.); 1934-1938
(This scrapbook was part of the original LCCC Collection)
Photographs in the Lawndale Crawford
Community Collection comprise of the first accession and four subsequent
accessions. To facilitate research photographs have been arranged by
series, regardless of which accession it belonged to. Please see the
note below for provenance.
Supplementary Photographs
Photographs numbered 2.1 through 2.32 were received at the same time as those numbered with a prefix of "1." It is unclear why they were missed in the original enumeration of LCCC photos.
2.12 through 2.32 are photographs of Lawndale-Crawford groups. Many are identified person-by-person. They are listed here by main entry only.
Photographs numbered 3.1 through 3.4 are glass plate slides for which there are no corresponding paper prints in the LCCC collection. There are many other glass plates in the collection which are assigned the catalog number of the paper copy.
Photographs numbered 4.1 through 4.46 were on loan when the original collection was cataloged and were therefore missed in the series cataloged under prefix "1".
Photographs 5.1 through 5.5 are proof sheets made from some thirty negatives found in an envelope marked "Toman Branch Library." These images date from the time of World War II as evidenced by various photos of the South Lawndale Victory Garden. Largely unidentified, these images are numbered only by proof sheets and listed under "Wartime".
