Scope and Content

Due to the number of newspapers involved and taking into account their oversized and fragile condition, it was deemed appropriate to organize these newspapers into a separate collection. The newspapers are arranged first alphabetically by newspaper's name and then, chronologically.

It is interesting to note that some newspapers in this collection were published prior to Englewood's annexation to Chicago in 1898. This accounts for the several different names used to describe the Englewood area.

Provenance

This collection of community newspapers was collected between the years 1937 and the early 1960s by members of the Englewood Historical Association. The collection remained at the Hiram Kelly Branch of the Chicago Public Library until 1985 when the Special Collections Division obtained custody and processed the collection under the auspices of a Dr. Scholl Foundation grant.

Access

The Englewood Newspaper Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate, although photocopy and photoreproduction services are available depending upon the condition of the original materials. First time patrons to Special Collections must present photo identification and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collection and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.
