Historical Note

The area of the East Garfield Park Community, three miles west of Chicago's Loop, was sparsely settled, undeveloped prairie when annexed to the city in 1869.  The extension of streetcar service along Madison Street in 1874, the introduction of municipal services, and the construction of the Lake Street elevated line in the 1890s spurred development and residential growth.  Employment opportunities and community stability increased with the construction of a 55 acre complex by Sears, Roebuck in 1905.  Employment along railroad lines attracted a large working class of Irish, German, and other Europeans communities.  Although population reached 56,000 by 1920,  a population shift westward after World War I resulted in many of the community's middle and upper class residents moving to suburbs such as Oak Park and Maywood.  In the 1930s growing numbers of Italians and Russian Jews migrated into the area.  In the decades following World War II another major population shift occurred, when a large number of working-class African-Americans migrated into the area from neighborhoods within the adjacent Near West Side Community and the South Side's overcrowded Douglas and Grand Boulevard communities.

Provenance

The East Garfield Park Community Collection was originally part of the collections of the West Side Historical Society, which formed at the Legler branch of The Chicago Public Library in 1930 to promote and collect the history of Chicago's west side.  Upon the dissolution of the Historical Society in the late 1950s, its records and materials remained at the Legler branch, where they suffered the inadequate storage facilities.  To protect the materials, an agreement was struck in 1976 with the University of Illinois-Chicago Campus for the temporary custody of the collection at the University of Illinois.  As agreed, the materials were transferred to The Chicago Public Library's Special Collections Division ten years later, where they were divided up by community area, processed under the auspices of a grant from the Dr. Scholl Foundation, and placed in the Neighborhood History Research Collection.

Processed July 1989.

Access

The East Garfield Park Community Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. First time patrons to Special Collections must present a photo identification and complete a Reader Registration Form.
