Supplement 1 | Supplement 2 | Supplement 3
Provenance
Original accession, 1.1 – 6.89
Photographs with the prefix "1" come from a variety of sources but are primarily from the West Side Historical Society.
Photographs with the prefix "2" are portraits taken from an incomplete copy of Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men of Chicago, Written by the best talent of the Northwest. Photographically Illustrated by J[ohn]. Carbutt, Chicago: Wilson and St. Clair, 1868. Each photograph is accompanied by a facsimile signature. See photographs 17.1-17.8 for portraits from an additional copy of this publication.
Photographs with the prefix "3" are photos of the Sanitary District Drainage Canal/Chicago River and are listed under the subject heading of Municipal Agencies. The first 24 of these photographs are one set, photographed in 1942.
Photographs with the prefix "4" are 11 x 14 inch negatives of original engravings found in the 1866 Chicago Illustrated published by Jevne and Almini. Chicago Illustrated was issued serially in 13 parts, January to December, 1866. Two copies of the original publication, slightly variant from one to the other, are cataloged in the Special Collections and Preservation Division, call number NA735.C4J4. Each part contained four engravings of Chicago scenes, and a page of text about each.
Photographs with the prefix "5" are stereographs. Stereographs were first made in the late 1850s and continued to be produced up through the time of the Century of Progress Exposition in 1933. William C. Darrah in The World of Stereographs (Gettysburg, Pa.: Darrah, 1977, Folio TR780.D35 in the Special Collections and Preservation Division) gives this synopsis of Chicago in stereo:
The majority of the stereographs in this collection appear to be from the 1860s and immediately following the Fire in 1871.The classic views of Chicago were produced by John Carbutt in the mid 1860s. These splendid stereographs give an excellent view of the city and its principal buildings. Carbutt, one of America's greatest photographers, turned to photographing the West and then, in the later 1860s, to publishing the western views of other photographers. In 1870 he moved to Philadelphia, where he engaged in mechanical photo printing and dealing in supplies for these processes.
On October 8-9, 1871, the great Chicago Fire wrought vast destruction. Lovejoy and Foster, recently established in the city, issued what is probably the best series of the burned-out district. A score of photographers hurried to record the devastation. Among the most interesting views are those by P. B. Greene and T. T. Sweeney. As an aside, dozens of photographers lost their studios, negative files and records. Many operators quit the business completely and others moved to new localities. Carbutt's old gallery was destroyed by the fire.
Rebuilding of the city was completed within a year. . . . Melander and Lovejoy and Foster stereo graphed the newly finished hotels and mercantile streets. By 1876 Melander had issued about one hundred and twenty titles. The Union Stockyards and the meat packing establishments of Armour, Cudahy and Swift were photographed again and again from 1873 to 1925. Every stage of meat processing was well illustrated by stereo views.
The Columbian World's Fair in 1893 was covered by many photographers. B. W. Kilburn Company, designated "official photographer," issued about 600 views of the exhibition. The Century of Progress World's Fair . . . was illustrated by a fine 100-card Keystone set selected from approximately 200 available negatives.
Photographs with the prefix "6" are picture postcards. Most are in color, although it is color added to black-and-white images. Dates reflect postmarks.
Supplement 1, 7.1 – 9.9
Photographs with the prefix "7" are rehearsal and production photographs of various productions at the Theater on the Lake, in Lincoln Park, primarily between 1960 and 1963. Productions were the work of various neighborhood park theater groups. The photographs were collected in the late 1970s by the Lincoln Park Photo Documentation Project. These photographs are listed under the subject heading of Clubs and Organizations.
Photographs with the prefix "8" show the renovation of a basement apartment at 906 W. Wrightwood, Lincoln Park, July 1946-June 1947. This was the home of Joseph C. and Lydia Schmidt. Photographs were taken by professional photographer Martin J. Schmidt, brother of Joseph Schmidt, and donated to the Lincoln Park Photo Documentation Project in the 1970s.
Photographs with the prefix "9" are of miscellaneous subject designations. 9.3 was donated by the Saskatoon Public Library. 9.4-9.9 are the gift of James Francus, purchased by Francus from the Dicke Estate.
Supplement 2, 10.1 – 14.26
Photographs with the prefix "10" are stereographs of the ruins of Chicago after the 1871 Fire. All except 10.6 were photographed by "Ely" in Racine, Wisconsin. Photograph 10.6 is credited to John A. Philleo.
Photographs with the prefix "11" are color postcards. Dates given are postmarks. Photographs 11.3-11.17 are from historical paintings by Lawrence C. Earle, in the Banking Room of the Central Trust Co. building at 152 Monroe Street. Gift of Ralph G. Newman, 1996.
Photographs with the prefix "12" are portraits removed from a disbound, partial copy of Biographical Sketches of Leading Men published in the late 1870s. The text is located in Box 55, Folder 11a.Photographs with the prefix "13" were transferred from the Body Politic Theater Collection. They are views presumed to be taken in the Lincoln Park neighborhood in the late 1970s.
Photographs with the prefix "14" are from a variety of sources.
Supplement 3, 15.1 - 20.50

The book was transferred from the Portage-Cragin Branch of the Chicago Public Library.
Photographs with the prefix "16" are from a disbound volume, Chicago: Souvenir Album of Chicago and the Columbian Exposition (S. L. Stein, 1893). 16.66-16.75 are lithographs Taken from the watercolor sketches of the World's Columbian Exposition grounds by C. Graham. They were presumably prepared from building designs to be used for publicity while the fairgrounds were being constructed.
Photographs with the prefix "17" are plates which originally appeared in Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men of Chicago, Photographically Illustrated by J. Carbutt (Chicago: Wilson and St. Clair, 1868). Includes facsimile of subject's signature and biographical sketch.
