Scope and Content

This supplement contains manuscript materials, Oversize Materials, and Photographs arranged into the series designations of Biographical Data, Business Establishments, Cemeteries, Churches, Clubs and Organizations, Historical Events and Sketches, Hospitals, Libraries, Municipal Agencies, Museums, Parks, Residences, Schools, Streets, Transportation, Viewbooks, and Wartime Activities.

Materials in this supplement come from four principle sources. The first and largest is a transfer of materials from the Municipal Reference Library of the city of Chicago in the summer of 1991, which includes many pamphlets regarding businesses and municipal offices from the 1910s through 1930s. Of particular note are brochures of a number of public and private mass transportation companies in the 1920s.

A second large body of material comes from a dismantled scrapbook prepared as a student project in 1962 by Joan Abell, of the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. The theme of this scrapbook was "contemporary Chicago," and Abell therefore collected an array of pamphlets, brochures, photographs, postcards and advertisements from businesses in the Loop and some outlying neighborhoods. Many items throughout this series dated "c. 1962" are from this scrapbook. In addition photographs 18.1-18.28 are postcards from this scrapbook.

A third set of records is a series of publications concerning the problems surrounding the formation of the Chicago Transit Authority and the attempt to construct subway railroads in Chicago. These materials were deaccessioned from the Baker Library of Harvard University in 1985. They are located in the series Transportation, subseries Mass Transit, Boxes 80-81. Finally, many materials in this supplement were purchased from dealers in 1990-1991.

Of note in the series Schools is an oversize volume of drawings from the Chicago Public Schools earning Highest Recognition at the Paris Exposition of 1900. This volume is located in Box 86. A full inventory of artists and subjects is provided following the listing of Oversize Materials.

Photographs in this supplement come largely from the plates of disbound publications. Provenance is noted in the Inventory when known. Of note is a set of fifty Stereographs (20.1-20.50) entitled "A Trip Through Sears, Roebuck and Co." To facilitate research, all photographs, regardless of accession, are listed together. A complete list of photographs can be found in the photograph finding guide.
