Chicago City-Wide Collection

Scope and Content

Supplement 2 consists of manuscript material within the series of Biographical Data, Business Establishments, Cemeteries, Churches, Clubs and Organizations, Historical Events and Sketches, Hospitals, Libraries, Miscellaneous, Municipal Agencies, Museums, Parks, Residences, Schools, Streets, Transportation, Viewbooks, and Wartime Activities. The largest series is that of Business Establishments, which is rich in turn of the century business interests. Also of note are documents concerning lawsuits brought against the Board of Education by taxpayers over the issue of 1929 tax anticipation warrants, given to the Chicago Public Library by John Nuveen & Co. (See Schools, Box 60, Folders 9-38). In addition, an exhaustive history of the Chicago Area United Service Organization is provided by their scrapbooks (See Wartime Activities, World War II, Boxes 64-66).

Also included are a series of 134 of at least 171 maps of Chicago city parks, produced by a Works Progress Administration project in the 1930s (Oversize 112). An index to these maps follows the inventory of Oversize Material. Each map delineates the legal history of the park shown. Original numbering, alphabetical by park name, has been maintained. These materials were given to the Mayor's office during the term of Harold Washington, and transferred to the Chicago City-Wide Collection from the papers of Harold Washington in March of 1991.

Photographs included in this supplement come from a variety of sources, detailed in the Photograph inventory below. Photographs are arranged by series and to facilitate research, all photographs, regardless of accession, are listed together. A complete list of photographs can be found in the photograph finding guide.

Processed by Galen R. Wilson, April 1991.
