One hundred fifty years ago, Austin, then called Sandy Ridge in reference to the prominent moraine running through the area, was a vast prairie, punctuated by swamps and bountiful numbers of waterfowl. Its principal attraction was the area's few Indian trails on the high ground and its convenient location as a resting spot between Galena, Illinois and Chicago. As early as the mid-19th century, John Pierson moved his tavern house from Whiskey Point and reopened it in Austin alongside the Lake Street Turnpike. Pierson's well-known Six Mile House provided travelers with the only food and lodging on the road between Des Plaines, Illinois and Austin.
Chicago's West Side developed less rapidly than the city's North and South Sides. The Near West Side's designation as Chicago's port-of-entry for newly arriving immigrants, combined with inadequate transportation links into the city and the dilapidated condition of some of Madison Street's businesses, impeded the West Side's economic development, and led to Chicago's characteristic hourglass shape. The Austin area did not offer its residents and businesses a railroad depot until the Chicago & Northwestern constructed one in April 1866. Moreover, as late as the 1890s, many major thoroughfares in Austin became muddy and impassable each time it rained or snowed.
On June 25, 1835, Henry L. DeKoven obtained title to land embracing what could today be identified as the heart of Austin. The original land acquisition of 280 acres was bounded on the west by Austin Boulevard (6000W), on the north by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad tracks, on the east by Central Avenue (5600W) and on the south by Augusta Boulevard (800N). In the 1850s, much of the land was subdivided, and with additional acquisitions--notably Henry W. Austin's 280 acre parcel--Austin expanded to incorporate its present boundaries.
Despite the subdivisions and real estate activities of the 1850s, it was not until the advent of hourly suburban train service in the 1880s before much growth occurred. By 1890, however, Austin had a population of over 400 people. During the first decade of the 20th century further transportation developments such as the Lake Street Elevated, the Garfield Park Elevated to Cicero, and the Madison Street and Chicago Line, stimulated additional growth in Austin. By 1920, the area boasted a population of 74,000.
In 1899, Austin residents voted in favor of annexation to Chicago. The debate over annexation was an acrimonious one, with the eventual outcome having been decided by the United States Supreme Court. Political rivalries concerning patronage and other returns led to conflicts between Cicero and the smaller towns of Austin and Oak Park. Austin was at one time part of Cicero. The town of Cicero obtained self-governing rights from the Illinois General Assembly in 1869. Apparently, residents of Cicero's eastern sections felt they were not receiving their fair share of city services, thus inhibiting their economic development. At the same session of the General Assembly, votes were cast in favor of extending the western boundaries of Chicago to include a two-mile strip from the eastern edge of Cicero. Oak Park residents fought annexation and were able to retain their status as a separate government entity, and today provides Austin with its western boundary.
Austin's Town Hall stands today as a proud reminder of Austin's independent heritage. The Town Hall, built in the 1890s near the elevated train stop at Central Avenue and Lake Street, has witnessed the growth, decline and now rebirth of the Austin community. From Austin's beginnings as a waystation along the Lake Street Turnpike, to the late 1950s, the community prospered and grew. In the 1960s however, racial tension, demographic shifts and the unethical activities of some real estate brokers threatened Austin's development. The Austin Community Collection is fortunate to have Newspaper clippings and complete newspapers documenting the community's attempts to grapple with periods of prosperity and turmoil.

The Austin Community Collection (ACC) emerged as the most significant collection of those originating from the Austin Branch Library. It is an excellent historical source for researchers concerned with the demographic, economic, cultural, social, political, and religious development of Austin. The collection contains biographical information on some of Austin's residents, as well as information on business establishments, churches, clubs and organizations, hospitals, municipal agencies, parks, residences, schools, streets, transportation, and war time activities. The collection also includes over 300 photographs.
The collection consists of an initial accession and three subsequent accessions, processed as Supplements 1-3. Inventories of oversized materials and the photographs in the collection, as well as a newspaper subject index, follow the Box and Folder Inventory.
INITIAL ACCESSION (Boxes 1-9)
This accession is divided into 13 series. Each series is arranged chronologically
or alphabetically. An inventory of the photographs in the collection
follows the content listing of the paper materials. Some duplicate materials
and selected photocopies are also held in the Austin Branch Library's
historical collection (5615 W. Race, Chicago, Illinois, 60644; telephone: 312-746-5038; fax: 312-746-5192).
Series I: BIOGRAPHICAL DATA, 1866-1965 (predominately 1930's)
This series contains Newspaper clippings, photo-graphs, historical sketches
and correspondence. Comprised predominately of Newspaper clippings
and photo-graphs, the Biographical Data series provides researchers
with information on hundreds of Austin residents. This series is arranged
alphabetically by the subject's surname. Photo-graphs are arranged in
alphabetical order under the classification "Portraits and Family Photo-graphs"
(see inventory).
Series II: BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS, 1891- 1973
The Business Establishments series consists of Newspaper clippings,
photo-graphs, historical sketches, and printed material and ephemera. It is arranged alphabetically by business name. Although a small series,
it does contain documents from some of Austin's substantial businesses. Researchers should also consult the Austin Newspaper Collection (ANC)
which provides a rich source for local business advertisements over
the last 70 years.
Series III: CHURCHES, 1911-1966 (predominately 1930-1950)
This series documents religious activities in Austin and represents
Baptist, Christian, Congregational, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist,
Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, and Unitarian churches. The records
consist of church constitutions and by-laws, annual reports, membership
rosters, reports, Newspaper clippings, programs, historical sketches,
photo-graphs, pamphlets, brochures and other printed materials. Churches
are arranged alphabetically by denomination and again by the church's
name.
Series IV: CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS, 1874-1968 (predominately 1930-1950)
The records documenting Austin's many clubs and organizations consist
of administrative materials, correspondence, newspaper clippings,
manuscripts, historical sketches, printed material, and photographs. Austinites were involved in a variety of social, cultural or civic
organizations. This series provides researchers with evidence of how
Austin residents spent their leisure time. The series is arranged
alphabetically by the club or organization's name.
Series V: COMMUNITY HISTORICAL ESSAYS AND SKETCHES, 1890-1976
This series contains historical essays and sketches of Austin in a
variety of formats. Directories, newspaper clippings, tax sale
receipts, real estate transactions, scrapbooks, pamphlets, brochures,
and maps are all represented in this series. Land title abstracts
and receipts from tax sales dating from the late 1800's are telling
evidence of Austin's development. Several excellent pamphlets on Austin's
history, written by Austin residents, are also available. The arrangement
of this series is alphabetical.
Series VI: HOSPITALS, 1925-1981 (predominately 1920s)
This small series contains records from three of Austin's hospitals;
St. Anne's, Austin Hospital and West Suburban Hospital. The documents
in this series include photo-graphs, correspondence, Newspaper clippings,
and souvenir programs. The series is arranged alphabetically.
Series VII: PARKS, 1912-1936
This series contains a copy of the enabling ordinance for Holden Park
and Newspaper clippings on other Austin parks. While Austin does not
contain any of Chicago's larger parks, the community has been served
well by several smaller parks. The area's most well-known landmark,
the Austin Town Hall, stands today in Holden Park. This series is
arranged alphabetically by alphabetically by park name.
Series VIII: RESIDENCES, 1860-1863
This small series documents some of Austin's oldest and most distinguished
homes. Items in this series consist of photo-graphs, correspondence,
historical sketches, and newspapers. Homes once owned by Seth P. Warner,
Nelson Bassett and the Burkhart Family home are all represented in
this series which is arranged alphabetically by the name of the street
on which the house was located. Cross references have been made
to homeowners appearing both in the biographical data series and the
residence series.
Series IX: SCHOOLS, 1873-1978
School has been in session in Austin since 1872 when the North School
was first erected on what today is the site of Francis Scott Key School. This series contains brochures, fliers, historical sketches, audio-visual
materials, Newspaper clippings and publications. Documents from Austin
High School have been separated into their own collection (see Austin
High School Collection-AUHS).
Series X: STREET SCENES, ca. 1910-1938
This small series of two folders consists primarily of newspaper clippings
and photographs. The first folder contains newspaper clippings of Austin
streets, arranged alphabetically from A to Z, by street name. The
second folder documents the development of Austin's viaducts and bridges. Austin streets have come a long way since 1849, when Lake Street was
planked as far west as Oak Park. Lake Street can probably be called
the focal point of Austin's development. In 1850, Lake Street became
a toll road, belonging to the Lake Street County Line Road Company. The toll road company sold stock to some of Austin's most prestigious
residents. Seth P. Warner and Henry W. Austin were among the company's
earliest investors.
Series XI: TRANSPORTATION, 1903-1952
As in other Chicago neighborhoods, Austin's development was inextricably
tied to the health and extent of its transportation services. The
construction of Austin Town Hall near the railway station at the corner
of Central Avenue and Lake Street underscores the significance of
railroading to Austin's early development. In 1915, according to one
source, over 48 million passengers rode the West Madison Street Surface
Line between Austin Boulevard and Canal Street. This series contains
newspaper clippings and photographs documenting the relationship between
Austin's economic growth and the concurrent development of transportation
to Chicago. This small series is arranged alphabetically.
Series XII: WAR TIME ACTIVITIES, 1917-1919
This series documents some of on the homefront during World War I. Arranged alphabetically by folder title, this series contains programs
from memorial ceremonies and songs composed for Liberty Loan workers.
Series XIII: SCRAPBOOKS, ca. 1890-1948
The scrapbooks in this series contain newspaper clippings about Austin
residents, places and events. They were collected by Austin residents
over a period of almost 50 years. The original arrangement has been
maintained.
SUPPLEMENT 1 (Boxes 10-12)
The materials in Supplement 1 parallel those in the original Austin Community
Records with the primary difference being provenance. The materials in
the original collection were amassed by the Austin Historical Society
and were deposited in the Austin Branch of the Chicago Public Library. The contents of the supplement were assembled by the West Side Historical
Society, which housed its collections in the Legler Branch (then Regional)
Library. The bulk of Supplement 1 of the Austin Community Records consists
of newspaper clippings, particularly in the subject areas of Biographical
Material, Churches, Streets, and Transportation. Excellent primary documentation
also exists for the Brach's Candy Company and Western Electric.
SUPPLEMENT 2 (Box 12)
The materials in this small supplement consist almost entirely of newspaper
clippings assembled by the West Side Historical Society. In addition
to the material in these folders, a typescript history on the Brach's
Candy Company and a magazine published by that company have been added
to Box 10, folder 12.
SUPPLEMENT 3 (Box 13)
This supplement contains a probable and incomplete copy of Picturesque
Austin, by W.H. Baker, 1888. This little volume has one page of
narrative description about the town of Austin, and 17 plates with various
views of the town (negatives of these plates can be found in the general
photographic collection, accession numbers are listed on the folders
in this collection). The plates are printed in either black or blue
ink and are possibly drawn from more than one original copy of the book. There are two copies of the narrative and of "Central Avenue from Depot
Looking South. " These copies are marked as having been the gift of Nellie
Bond. Picturesque Austin was originally part of the West Side
Historical Society collection.
Provenance Beginning in the 1930s and lasting until the mid 1970s, three Austin
organizations contributed their time and effort toward preserving their
neighborhood's historic past. Working closely with the Henry W. Austin
Branch of the Chicago Public Library, members of the Austin Historical
Society, the Library Friends Club and the Old Settlers organization
collected materials documenting their neighborhood's historic character
and development. In 1981, the Special Collections Division conducted a survey of branch
libraries holding neighborhood history collections. Survey results indicated
that while many branches had significant holdings on the history of
their neighborhood, few were able to maintain their collections in accordance
with standard archival practices. Many of the collections were showing
evidence of deterioration caused by inadequate storage, security and
retrieval methods. Special Collections received funds from the Dr. Scholl Foundation in
1983 and 1984 to appraise, collect and process the neighborhood history
collections held in the Chicago Public Library's branches. Processing
of the Austin collections began in November 1984. Processed December 1988, January 1989, and June 1989 by G. Wilson.
Updated April 2001 by A. Telli.
Access The Austin Community Collection is available to the public for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room on the 9th floor of the Chicago Public Library's Harold Washington Library Center, 400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605. The collection does not circulate although photocopy services are available depending upon the condition of the materials. First time patrons to the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room must present a photo-i.d. and complete a Reader Registration Form. Telephone inquiries on this collecton and other Special Collections holdings can be directed to 312-747-4875.
