West Belmont
About this Library
The West Belmont Branch began its history as a small rented storefront sub-branch of the Logan Square Branch. It opened on September 20, 1961 at 6059 W. Belmont, hence the name of the Branch.
In the Spring of 1968, the City began negotiating to acquire the land on the northwest corner of Barry and Narragansett near Steinmetz High School, land which had previously been a gas station. The new, library-owned building opened on October 30, 1971, bringing vastly improved library facilities and services to residents of the northwest side.
This attractive building has exterior and interior walls of red and brown brick, with ranks of slender, recessed windows. The structure fits graciously into the surrounding residential neighborhood.
