VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS

  11 of 12

The Visual and Performing Arts Department, the second of the two departments in the Humanities Division, covers architecture, costume, decorative arts and crafts, fine arts, dance, theater, photography, music, printed scores, radio, television and film. Special holdings include the Picture Collection and the Chicago Artists' Archives.

The Chicago Blues Archives, Jubilee Showcase Gospel Video Collection and the Balaban and Katz Theater Orchestra Collection all highlight Chicago's rich musical heritage. The Listening/Viewing Center allows for the playback of recorded sound and video formats for research and study during limited hours; please confirm available times. A reference collection of performance arts for researchers ranges from 78s to compact discs and video. An extensive collection of periodicals supports the book collections. Six individual piano practice rooms and a chamber music rehearsal room are located here. In the floor elevator corridor, view exhibits on the Library Collections and Chicago Blues Archives. Five architectural models, part of the original architectural proposals submitted in 1988 for the Design/Build Competition for the Harold Washington Library Center, offer alternative architectural visions of a Central Library for Chicago. The model of the award-winning design can be viewed on the ninth floor, as part of the exhibit, Called to the Challenge: the Legacy of Harold Washington.
