Social Science & History
The Social Science and History Department covers an array of subjects including education, history, psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, library science, philosophy, religion, political science, general biography, genealogy, sports, and travel. The periodical collection is divided with current, bound and microform periodicals shelved on the 5th floor and corresponding indexes and abstracts on the 6th floor.

Featured Collections
- Chicago Collection: A reference collection spanning the history of our city, from its loftiest skyscrapers to the Deep Tunnel project, this collection features all aspects of the city's life and culture.
- Foundations and Grants: A reference collection of basic sources on foundations, grants, and proposal writing developed for the use of researchers. Titles providing information on technical assistance, fund raising techniques, and how to establish a non-profit organization are also included.
- Travel, Maps and Atlases: This collection includes an extensive collection of current travel guides such as Fodor's, Frommer's and Michelin. In addition, books describing cities, countries, ancient civilizations and archaeology help the traveler in preparing for a trip. Reference atlases and maps provide an additional resource for travel planning.
- Teacher Resource Center: A wide range of activity-based resources and titles offer curriculum support. This collection assists teachers, administrators, students and others interested in creating lesson plans and the practice of teaching.
