It's Not What You Think

Special Collections Unit

The Special Collections Unit contains a variety of research materials divided into the following areas of concentration. The Chicago History Collection consists of both primary and secondary resources intended to supplement the Archival Unit's holdings. The Rare Books and Manuscript Collection includes examples of the history of the book from manuscripts to print, Chicago's pre-fire imprints, and volumes from the English Book Donation. Examples of the history of the book in Chicago can be found in the Chicago Authors Collection and the Chicago Publishing and Book Arts Collection. Email the Special Collections Unit at specoll@chipublib.org.

In addition to printed materials, Special Collections houses and manages several art and artifact collections, the Library's art collection, art from the Division's special collections, and rare items from the American Civil War. Due to the unique nature of these materials, patrons are asked to call in advance for viewing.
