Richard J. Daley Branch was dedicated February 1, 1989, replacing the Bridgeport Branch, a small storefront that began library service May 12, 1966 at 824 W. 35th Street. The branch is named in honor of the late mayor of Chicago, who was a lifelong resident of the Bridgeport community. Daley served six terms as mayor, from April 20, 1955 until he died in office on December 20, 1976.
