About This Library
Altgeld Branch is located in the Altgeld Garden-Phillip Murray Homes housing community. President Barack Obama discusses community work he did in the Altgeld community in his book Dreams from My Father.
The branch shares a building with Carver Elementary/Phillis Wheatley Child Parent Center, replacing its former location at 903 E. 132nd Place. The new branch, designed by Urban Works Architects, is the collaborative work of three City agencies: Chicago Housing Authority, Chicago Public Schools and Chicago Public Library.
The branch provides library and information service to several other residential communities, including residents of Golden Gate Homeowners, Concordia Place Apartments and Riverside Village Apartments & Townhomes.
