#TBT: Back to the Future Day

On this Throwback Thursday, let's travel through time to Back to the Future Day.

In the Back to the Future Part II, Michael J. Fox's character, Marty McFly, takes off in his DeLorean in 1985 and lands on October 21, 2015. Although it's disappointing that the movie's predictions about hovercrafts and flying cars haven't come true yet, the Cubs really might win the World Series this year.

Let's revisit the top pop culture sensations of Marty McFly's 1985.

On October 26, 1985, the date of Marty's departure, Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You" hit #1 on Billboard's Top 100 List. At the MTV Video Music Awards that year, Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It?" won Best Female Video. The song, featured on her Private Dancer album, also won Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammys.

Popular books released that year included Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat, Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove and Bret Easton Ellis' Less Than Zero. (A few years later, in 1989, Lonesome Dove was adapted into a very successful television miniseries.)

At the box office, the original Back to the Future ranked #1, grossing $211 million dollars. Other favorites from that year include The Breakfast Club and The Goonies.
