Presidents Are People, Too

Yes, they were large and in charge, but our presidents were also fathers, sons and friends. While in office, they had to be serious and work hard for the American people, but on their way there, they made messes and mistakes just like the rest of us. Take a look at these true stories about the lives of the presidents and see what made them the real deal.

In office from 1901 to 1909, Teddy Roosevelt said of his daughter, Alice, "I can run the country, or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both." That might have been because Alice and her brothers and sister (and her snake, Emily Spinach) were pretty wild First Kids. Check out how the other First Dads stack up.

Who knows us best — mom. She's there to catch us if we fall and to applaud us when we succeed. The presidents' moms were no exception. Find out what all the First Mothers where like, what they thought about life and what they thought their sons had BETTER remember. It turns out that Honest Abe was quite a prankster!

If the Walls Could Talk, the White House would have all the juicy, presidential gossip. From George Washington to George "Dubya," there are interesting tidbits about each president. For instance, did you know that Abigail Adams used to hang her laundry up to dry in the East Room of the White House?

Did you know Thomas Jefferson kept bear cubs? Or that Martin Van Buren fought with Congress over his baby tigers? And remember Emily Spinach? She was only one of more than a half dozen Presidential Pets kept by the Roosevelts. From alligators to zebras, so many different animals have been kept as pets by the presidenital families that the White House might be better named the "White Zoo."
