New Food for the New Year

Instead of giving up chocolate or vowing to make your diet consist completely of vegetables, maybe you've just decided to simply change the way you eat in 2014. For those of you like me who have a brand-new Kitchen Aid mixer that's been sitting on the living room floor since spring, you just want the accomplishment of cooking a complete meal yourself.

Jessica Seinfeld's The Can't Cook Book might be able to help you with that. Filled with 100-plus recipes and detailed instructions, The Can't Cook Book does  provide some tasty dishes with healthy ingredients. Each recipe is photographed to make you actually want to eat what you're trying to make, and her "Don't Panic" instructions come in handy for those who don't know their way around the kitchen. I personally liked the fried eggs over broiled tomatoes recipe. Who knew that broiled tomatoes were delicious and good for you! Next I plan to tackle her fresh berry crumb cake and the toasted pine nut and cranberry quinoa.

If you are serious about changing your eating habits this year, try reading Deepak Chopra's latest inspirational book, What Are You Hungry For?. Everyone  knows the rules of trying to lose weight, but it's just as important to understand why we form certain eating habits and how that affects our lives. Chopra's book allows readers to take a good look at  how they think about food in relationship to life fulfillment. The book is filled with self-reflecting worksheets, Chopra's own personal recipes and my favorite—the Flavors of Emotion chart. It sounds very "Zen," but for those of us serious about wanting to change the way we eat, Zen might be what we need.
