Graphic Novels to Tug at Your Heartstrings

There are so many amazing graphic novels out there these days, but did you know that some of them are true stories? If illustrated memoirs intrigue you, the following titles will make you feel all the feelings. They're touching, disturbing, heart-wrenching, inspiring and informative. Even if you've never read a graphic novel, I recommend you dive into these titles. You won't be disappointed!

Blankets by Craig Thompson illustrates Thompson’s life and struggles while growing up in Wisconsin. His beautiful descriptions of his feelings and the life around him tell a special story of his relationships with his family and his first love Raina. Thompson's detailed illustrations bring this tale to life and illuminates the trials of growing up and learning how to make life your own.

Did you hear about the Persepolis protest? The Illinois Library Association presented Lane Tech College Prep High School with its Intellectual Freedom Award for protesting against the removal of it from the school. Now here's your chance to read Marjane Satrapi's memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, which gives the reader a personal and historical account of a time period rife with life-altering changes.

David Small's coming-of-age story Stitches tells the tale of a physically and emotionally painful childhood. While it is difficult to read about the abuse he suffered, the story ends on a satisfying note.
