Dogs Can Get the Flu Too!

A couple of weeks ago we were all set to spend a Saturday in Michigan and decided to board the dog overnight at his usual doggie day care. But the Monday before the trip we received an urgent email from the day care warning us about a recent outbreak of so-called “kennel cough” at the facility and at other places in the city. Needless to say we made other arrangements for our dog that day. Turns out the kennel cough scare was, and still is, a citywide Canine Influenza Virus epidemic.

Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) is a relatively new ailment. Much like human varieties of the flu, the highly contagious virus manifests itself as an upper respiratory disease. Once your dog has contracted the virus, symptoms may not show up for a few days. Dogs that frequently come into contact with other dogs at day cares or dog parks are deemed most at risk for contracting the virus.

What can you do to protect your dog? First, limit your dog’s exposure to other dogs. Secondly, talk to your vet. They can best assist you in determining your dog's risk and whether a CIV vaccine is in order.
