Doctor Who, Take Me With You!

As a Doctor Who fangirl (yes, I saw Matt Smith at Comicon 2014), I was excited to see the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, debut on BBC America last year. A show that lasts for 50 years is a testament to people's enduring fascination with time travel, aliens and odd men who pop out of police boxes and offer to take you on their travels. Who could resist the opportunity to see the stars or go anywhere in Earth's history? While you're waiting for the next Doctor Who adventure, try these travels to other times:

The River of No Return by Bee Ridgway. Lord Nicholas Falcott is almost killed in battle, but then is transported to modern-day London. He is rescued by an enigmatic group, The Guild, but also told that he must make a new life in another country. After 10 years, The Guild sends Nick back to his own time to find a mysterious talisman that unlocks the secrets of time and could prevent the world from destroying itself. A fast-paced blend of romance, adventure and science fiction, this novel will make you wish for a place to be transported to so you can finish it.

Blackout and All Clear by Connie Willis. These novels are the last entry in an engrossing series about a group of future Oxford historians who time travel back into history to do cultural research, but get drawn into adventures. The two books were published separately but are one story about England during World War II. The series started with The Dooms Day Book and To Say Nothing of the Dog, both of which won Willis a number of accolades and awards. Willis writes long novels with interesting characters, fascinating glimpses into history and great stories.

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. Set in Chicago's history, this book features a creepy house that allows a serial killer to travel through time. Need more? Harper Curtis is under the sway of a house with doors that open on to other times. The price is destruction of young women who "shine" with potential. Kirby Mazrachi escapes and teams up with a reporter to hunt down the man who tried to murder her. The story is suspenseful, fantastic and might appeal to fans of Devil in the White City.
