Do You Want to Build a Snowman?

Even though we've had our hats, scarves, gloves and coats out for a while, the first day of winter is finally here!  Winter officially begins on December 21, a day that is called the Winter Solstice because it has the shortest amount of daylight.

Here in Chicago, winters can be extremely cold, but that doesn't mean you have to stay inside!  I love to play in the snow — sledding, building snowmen and having snowball fights with my brother.  I also love ice skating Chicago at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park and I can't wait to visit the new skating ribbon in Maggie Daley Park too.

Of course, after all that chilly outdoor winter fun, it's great to curl up inside with a cozy blanket and a book!

I love to celebrate The First Day of Winter by reading this fun counting book about building a snowman!

If you're still thinking about building a snowman, it's inspiring to see how a few found objects and a little imagination can help you create a whole family out of snow in Snowballs.  Or, listen to the story of how Little Nell builds The Biggest, Best Snowman with the help of her forest friends.

The Biggest, Best Snowman is available in multiple formats.

The first big snowfall of the year always makes me reach for The Snowy Day.  I love the beautiful illustrations in this classic Caldecott Medal winner.

The Snowy Day is available in multiple formats.

Don't forget one of the most "out of this world" ways to celebrate the first day of winter by blasting off with our Winter Learning Challenge!
