Dancing Through Books

When I was young, I dreamed of being a ballerina. Not in a casual way - was serious about it. (And by serious, I mean sort of a little bit obsessed.)

And to this day, I will immediately grab any book that is a tiny bit about dance. Pointe shoe on the cover? Done. Street dancers mid leap? Sign me up. Ballet pun in the title? YES PLEASE! If you’re like me and you live for the music and the mirror, here are some books you might like.

Pirouette by Robyn Bavati is a fun romp, with different styles of dance, not just ballet.

Pointe by Brandy Colbert is one of my favorite books of the year. It tackles several tough subjects with honesty including race, friendship and sexual assault.

Sometimes dreams aren't what you thought they'd be and in Bunheads we get an insider view of life as a ballerina from an author, Sophie Flack, who's really been there.

The ballet field can be hard for black ballerinas, but in Dancer by Lorri Hewett, Stephanie is determined to find a way. If you’re inspired by Michaela DePrince or Misty Copland, you’ll love this book.

And speaking of Misty Copeland - the first African American dancer in over 20 years to reach the rank of Soloist with American Ballet Theater - she describes her journey in her fantastic memoir Life in Motion.
