Celebrate National Poetry Month

Did you know it's National Poetry Month? The nice thing about poetry is it can be about anything. These three books are all poetry, but different in their own ways.

I Feel A Little Jumpy Around You is divided into broad subjects, but within each subject are paired poems, one by a man and one by a woman. It is up to the reader to decide why they are connected, but if you don't want to, that's okay, too. What's nice about this book is that you can jump around to different sections and read a little here and a little there.

The Brimstone Journals handles poetry in a different way by telling one story through a series of short poems. Each poem is written by a character, and I like how you get to know the personalities by short poems on each page. When you read it, it's easy to think that you may know some of these characters in your own life.

This last one won the Pura Belpre Award and is based on the true story of Cuba's struggle for freedom. The Surrender Tree uses beautiful imagery in its poetry to tell a difficult story. I like how history can be told in such a beautiful way even when the subject matter is one of pain and strife.
