An a-MAZE-ing Path Home

In Penny and Her Marble, Penny finds a marble, takes it home, returns it and then brings in back home again. It's a lot like finding your way through a maze. Try your hand at winding your way through these twisted books:

Mazes around the World: Discover the history of mazes from Greek Mythology to corn mazes.

Ecomazes: Explore the biomes and the animals that live in them as you trace your way through 12 mazes from around the world.

An A-MAZE-ing Amusement Park Adventure: Navigate your way through the maze of an amusement park.

Looking for even more mazes? Try making your own with a box, a few pieces of cardboard (straws work too) and some tape:

  • Take your box and decide where your start and end points will be. We used two opposite corners of our box and marked them with circles.
  • Cut your cardboard (ask an adult to help) into strips about half an inch wide.
  • Think about whether you want to make a long path with lots of twists and turns or a tricky path with lots of dead ends. You may want to draw out your path first.
  • Use the cardboard strips and tape to create a path from the start to end.
  • Once your maze is done, place your marble/ping pong ball at a starting point and move it through the maze.
  • What can you do to make the maze easier or more difficult?
  • Try making a larger marble run to get from one point to another.
